\u0160ibenik's St. Michael's Fortress hosted the kick-off conference to the project\u00a0FORTITUDE<\/a>\u00a0\u2013\u00a0<\/strong>Historic Fortresses Intensifying Cross-Border Tourism Development<\/strong>, entitled\u00a0Development of New Contents at Historic Fortresses and EU Projects \u2013 St. Michael's Fortress as Illustrative Example<\/em>. The conference was held for circa 50 participants in person and 25 online participants. The conference presented activities and contents of a project whose goal is to develop new content at historic fortresses thus enriching their cultural and tourism offer.<\/p>

The conference was organized by\u00a0Public Cultural Institution Fortress of Culture \u0160ibenik\u00a0<\/strong>(lead partner in procjet) while representatives of four partners\u00a0participated via video-calls due to current epidemiological circumstances:\u00a0City of Banja Luka (BIH), Municipality of Herceg Novi (MNE), City of Karlovac (HRV), Municipality of Bar (MNE).<\/p>

The participants were greeted by the City of \u0160ibenik Deputy Mayor\u00a0Danijel Mileta<\/strong>, Fortress of Culture director\u00a0Gorana Bari\u0161i\u0107 Ba\u010deli\u0107<\/strong>, together with\u00a0\u0110ur\u0111a Vrljevi\u0107 \u0160ari\u0107<\/strong>, FORTITUDE project manager.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

\n\t\t\t\tWhen you're 'born' out of a EU project, carrying those out becomes your natural state. Since the beginning of the Project of revitalization of St. Michael's Fortress in 2014, when Fortress of Culture's team was still a part of \u0160ibenik City Museum, a day hasn't gone by when we didn't work on some European project or other. The results of the projects we are presenting today wouldn't have been possible without a joint approach of city government and all other institutions involved, as well as all the partners from the private sector. Collaboration in implementing activities is in fact the key component in carrying out projects successfully. St. Michael's Fortress is a location that has seen the implementation of four European projects since 2012. This fact was emphasized multiple times during conference.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

\n\t\t\t

\n\t\t\t\tIt is easy to build on and work when you have the right people in the right place. We have all the right people at Fortress of Culture and at the city government board, all of who made a joint effort to re-establish the rich cultural heritage of the fortress, revitalize it and attain European money. Fortress of Culture is responsible for the new life of our fortresses, the upgrades in their contents, and made them self-sustainable. You could say those two reasons \u2013 right people combined with European money \u2013 put \u0160ibenik on today's tourism and cultural maps. That was done thanks to dozens of projects conducted over the last five years, that brought over billion kunas in investments to the city - said Deputy Mayor Mileta.\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/blockquote>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Project FORTITUDE \u2013 Historic Fortresses Intensifying Cross-Border Tourism Development \u2013 started on March 1st 2020, and will continue till February 28th 2022. Fortress of Culture is the lead partner, together with other partners: the city of Karlovac, Herceg Novi county, Bar county, and city of Banja Luka. The total value of the project comprises\u00a01 618 438.72 euros<\/strong>, from which 85% was co-funded out of the\u00a0Interreg IPA CBC Croatia \u2013 Bosnia and Herzegovina \u2013 Montenegro 2014-2020<\/strong>\u00a0programme. The main aim of the project is to strengthen and diversify the cultural and tourism offer in cross-border areas, as well as to develop a more quality and sustainable management of cultural goods.<\/p>

After project end, St. Michael's Fortress will gain a series of novel spatial solutions and contents in its interior: from 2022, visitors will be able to walk through a permanent thematic exhibition about \u0160ibenik's fortification heritage, as well as a multimedia interactive display dedicated to the construction of the open-air stage, \u0160ibenik's musical heritage and different on-stage programmes which branded St. Michael's Fortress as one of the most prestigious stages in Croatia. Apart from the fortress interior, City Point – information centre of \u0160ibenik fortresses – situated in the old city area, will be redesigned.\u00a0<\/p>

A special activity planned within the project is organization of\u00a0Night of the Fortresses<\/strong>. This future\u00a0manifestation will have\u00a0the goal of networking all the fortresses from the cross-border areas, promoting them and displaying to visitors the significance of valuable cultural heritage monuments for the development of cultural tourism in the program areas.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Conference participants obtained an insight into the recently developed digital contents at the fortress, implemented during project\u00a0Fortress ReInvented<\/strong>: 3D mapping projections inside the fortress’ cisterns, with the accompanying audio-guide. As Bari\u0161i\u0107-Ba\u010deli\u0107 stated, these projections inside cisterns presented a great new challenge for the lead project partner, \u0160ibenik City Museum, but also the production team. Today they represent a unique project in the whole Croatia.<\/p>
