NIGHT OF FORTRESSES 2025 TO TAKE PLACE AT OVER 70 LOCATIONS IN 10 EUROPEAN COUNTRIES!

On Friday, May 9th, more than 70 fortified sites across 10 European countries will simultaneously come to life as part of the fourth edition of the Night of Fortresses, which this year carries the title Night of Fortresses Goes Green.

This unique cultural event, celebrating the heritage of fortified sites, introduces a strong environmental focus in 2025. The central message of this year’s edition highlights the connection between nature and society, promoting values of sustainability, equality, inclusion, and cultural diversity.

The green initiative of this year’s Night of Fortresses has brought together a record number of participants – from coastal and inland fortresses, castles and museums to galleries and historic fortified towns in Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, Slovenia, Serbia, Czech Republic, Romania, Lithuania, Ukraine, and for the first time – Italy.

Organisers across Europe have prepared a wide array of free events and activities including open days, guided tours, exhibitions, lectures, workshops, concerts and more – all designed to creatively link culture with ecology.

In Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Montenegro, the event is organised as part of the EU-funded project GIFTSnet (Network for Green and Inclusive Fortified Tourism Solutions), under the Interreg IPA Cross-border Cooperation Programme Croatia – Bosnia and Herzegovina – Montenegro 2021–2027. The project is led by the Public Cultural Institution Fortress of Culture Šibenik, in partnership with the City of Banja Luka, Municipality of Bar, City of Karlovac, Public Institution Museum of Herzegovina Trebinje, and Municipality of Ulcinj.
